We will complete roll call and seating chart check again.  This is necessary so I can memorize your name.

I will collect the “Getting to Know You” sheet.

You will receive my classroom rules packet.  It will take us 2 days to completely cover everything important.  The back page is an agreement or contract of sorts that you and your guardians need to sign verifying that you and you guardian understand my rules.  You don’t have to agree with them, but you do need to know this is how I run my room and failure to follow them will result in a consequence.

I expect this to be returned on or before Monday, August 19, 2019.

The important topics?

  1. New science curriculum

  2. Behavior in class and lab

  3. Homework and my homework website

  4. Bonus work

  5. Classroom passes

  6. Portfolios and other necessary supplies

  7. Rewards

You will also receive a detailed lab safety contract.  This must also be signed and returned by Monday, August 19. 2019.  No student will be allowed in lab until this is returned.

Thursday, August 15

We will complete roll call and seating chart check again.  This is necessary so I can memorize your name.

If anyone has their classroom rules contract and lab safety contract to turn in, I will collect it.  Do not forget Monday is the deadline.

We will finish covering the classroom rules and lab safety.

I will assign lab groups.  I typically have the same group assignments for at least one quarter, perhaps longer.  I change lab groups as I see fit.

Students will then go to their assigned lab bench and we will complete a quick inventory.

1) We will first check out what is on the lab bench:  Sink, gas valves, digital balance, paper towels, upright rods, and outlets.

2) We will then check out what is in the drawer of your group's lab bench:  Tape measure, rulers, protractor, sharpie pens, chalk, calculator, scissors, thermometer, graduated cylinder, flint striker, bar magnet, plastic hand lenses, test tube tongs, crucible tongs, beaker tongs, serrated knife, metal transfer spoon/ spatula, and glass stirring rod.

3) We will then go through the equipment that is in the cabinet of your lab bench: Bunsen burner, ring stand, two- ring clamps, ceramic coated screen, and wooden test tube rack.

There will be a worksheet over identifying lab equipment for homework.  This will be due Friday.  Please be aware that I do not accept late work.  Below is the descriptors of the lab equipment.  I do not have a file of the picture of the equipment to match the descriptions with.  I suppose if you get in a real bind, you can draw a picture of each item.

Friday, August 16

We will complete roll call and seating chart check again.  This is necessary so I can memorize your name.

If anyone has their classroom rules contract and lab safety contract to turn in, I will collect it.  Do not forget Monday is the deadline.

We will check our first assignment, “Lab Equipment Matching”.  Each student is expected to honestly grade their own work with a red pen.  I go over the answers, usually with some discussion.  On the top of the worksheet near your name, you will record the number correct over the number possible in red ink.  I collect them so I can record your score.  If it is not graded in red ink, you lose points.  If your score is not posted, you lose points.  If your name is not on it, you lose points.

I then want to distribute composition notebooks.  If you want to purchase your own, you may.  I expect that everyone will have a 9.75 x 7.5 inch composition notebook with their name legibly written on the front.

We will then report to your assigned lab bench to solve “The Cup Challenge”.  You need to bring your composition notebook and a pencil with you.

You will be given 6 Solo cups and a rubber band tool.  The rubber band tool is constructed of one rubber band with four, 24 inch segments of string attached to the rubber band at right angles.  All six Solo cups should be placed upright in a row on your lab bench.  SO… What’s the challenge?  Using your rubber band tool ONLY, stack the six solo cups in a pyramid with three inverted cups on the bottom.  YOU MAY NOT TOUCH THE CUPS WITH YOUR HANDS!

You will need to address the following in your composition notebook for homework.  This will be due on Monday.  Please be aware that I do not accept late work.

  1. How did your group get started on the task?

  2. How did your group decide group roles (who did what)?

  3. How did your group use the tool to move the cups?

  4. Was your group successful in solving the challenge? (explain why or why not)

  5. What role did you play in the challenge?
