Tuesday 11/12/19

DUE TO SNOW DAY and MY NEED TO BE OUT OF THE CLASSROOM ON WEDNESDAY MORNING,  WHAT WAS SCHEDULED FOR TODAY HAS BEEN MOVED TO THURSDAY.

Wednesday 11/13/19

New plan for today:  "Describing Matter" packet.  There is a one page reading selection that goes along with this.  The book is not necessary, but certainly could come in handy.  You will be working on this all hour. It will be due on Thursday.  I am sorry, but I do not have a pdf for this.

Thursday 11/14/19

We will quickly check the packet then get to the activities.

We are going to complete two different activities.

The first is a classification activity.  There are several plastic containers

filled with bolts, nuts and washers.  Individual nuts, bolts, or washers

will represent individual atoms while a two or more connected together

will represent a compound.  Your job will be to determine if the container represents

an element, a mixture of a compound.  This lab page will be due at the end of the hour.

The other activity involves a serial dilution. We will dilute a drop of blue food coloring (a 10% solution) by a factor of ten several different times.  This lab page can be turned in at the end of the hour otherwise it should be turned in on Friday.

UPDATE:  We did not have time to do the nuts and bolts classification activity.  Another day perhaps...perhaps not.  I think it is odd that we completed the serial dilution on a day that we had no water in the room due to a water main break.  Coincidence?

Friday 11/15/19

The "Serial Dilution" lab page is due.

We are going to complete the "Elements, Mixtures, and Compounds" (Pyrite) lab today.  This lab involves powdered sulfur.  If you have a sensitivity to sulfur, DO NOT HANDLE the sulfur.  We will take the sulfur and iron powder and observe their individual characteristics.  We will mix the two elements together to form a heterogeneous mixture and observe it.  We will pour the mixture into a test tube and heat the mixture over the hottest part of the burner flame for 5 minutes.  This causes a compound to form, iron II disulfide or pyrite.  In order to get the plug of pyrite out of the test tube, it is plunged into cold water causing the test tube to break.  We will then observe the chunk of freshly created pyrite...Ahhh just like mom (Mother Nature) used to make.

You are reminded that open toe shoes will NOT be allowed.  NO, socks and sandals DO NOT count as a closed toe shoe and they are a horrible fashion decision.

Long hair must be tied back.  No, floppy sleeves allowed.  GOGGLES are a must as well as washing your hands after the lab.

Lab page due Monday. There is also a quiz over identifying substances as being an element, mixture or compound.

Here is the lab page.
