Tuesday 10/29/19

1.5 guided reading will be due.

We will complete the "Color Connection - Litmus Lab".  We will observe the look, smell, and feel of 5 different household solutions.  We will also test each with red and blue litmus paper.  We will determine if the solution is an acid or base not what the actual pH is or the identity of the solution.  No special clothing other than goggles is required. (sorry, I do not have a pdf for this)

DON'T FORGET the test is coming up on Tuesday, November 5th.  If you want the study guide, you will need to print it off for yourself.  I will not be passing out hard copies.  If you have questions on the study guide or want to check your answers, please see me.

Interested in extra credit???  I have three you may choose from. You will need to choose one not all three.

One is a more of a math challenge: Calculating pH if you know the H+ concentration or the OH- concentration.  You'll need to learn a little about logarithms but it is spelled out and not too difficult if you have a calculator. (Most have a "log" button).

One is more of a art challenge:  Decorate a tombstone for a famous scientist with an epitaph that relates to that scientist's work.  Research required.

The third is a Pearson Elevate online acid / base activity.  I have loaded it for you to complete online.  I am hoping this works this time., fingers crossed.  This may be the extra credit you have been looking for.

Wednesday 10/30/19

Don't forget that the test is coming up on Tuesday the 5th.

We will complete the "Color Connection, Cabbage Lab" today.  Since we are using the Bunsen burners, you will need to have long hair tied back.  You will also need goggles.

We will take red cabbage and chop it up, put it in a beaker, cover it with water and cook it using the Bunsen burner for about three to five minutes after it comes to a boil.  You will need to start with hot water from the tap or this could take a long time just to bring it to a boil.  Because it need time to cool, I will cook a batch for 2nd hour to use.  2nd hour will cook a batch for 3rd hour to use etc.  We will strain off the liquid and use it as a acid/ base indicator.

You will test as many solutions as you have time to test on the cell plate with your homemade natural indicator.  You will need to test a strong base, weak base, neutral liquid, weak acid, and strong acid.  You are looking for the color the indicator turns with each solution.  On the lab sheet, color in the entire pH scale using colored pencils.  The lab sheet should be turned in by the end of the hour.

Here is the GIANT portfolio checklist that will be due on Monday, Nov 4th.

You might get it organized ahead of time so you can use it as a review / study tool.
